If I knew that a poet’s life was lonely

I would’ve kept my words hoarded in my heart.

Would’ve never harmed my sleeves with intimate harmonies

Would’ve never tatted pain in permanent ink.

I sought refuge in emptiness.

Seen sorrows end up on a silver platter

A public crucifixion—

paid for the nails, the cross, and the hammer.

I’m at a point of no return,

while poetry carries me home.

Hands never hid in a glass

house that’s thrown stones.

My demons war for me

when my back is against the wall

You better have bandwidth for beef

Or regret not going vegan,

while you’re resting in peace.

Since people know what details my personal life

they act as if they know me.

They look to see what the mirror inside me reflects.

Sins too difficult to eyeball.

Sometimes I feel dead inside

Sometimes I can smell the decay

when I open my mouth

In the midst

Still, I gave y’all spare keys to my grandmother’s house,

Gave y’all floor seats to behind my peephole,

let y’all walk on my carpet wearing shoes,

lay in my bed with your soiled clothes.

Gave y’all food for thought while I faced famine.

& sometimes I regret letting y’all.

If I never shared my stories would I be here today?

Would I be pulling youths off the edge?

Helping them understand the importance of reading?

And that poppin’ pills ain’t a portal to freedom.

Even if it might seem,

Cause in reality,

you’re only as free as your last lived dream.

What keeps a rose’s fragrance?

The thorn that threatens

the hand that attempts to pick it?

Imagine a scent so sweet it’s

worth a nose full of blood.

Would a lotus flower hold its

beauty, if it wasn’t grown from the mud?
